Publication vs chronological reading order
First read: publication order. Chronological is for rereads — Ballad (10th) → Sunrise (50th) → trilogy. Never reverse Ballad and Sunrise.
Publication order
- The Hunger Games (2008)
- Catching Fire (2009)
- Mockingjay (2010)
- Ballad (2020)
- Sunrise on the Reaping (2025)
Recommended for newcomers.
Chronological (story)
- Ballad — 10th Games
- Sunrise — 50th Games
- The Hunger Games
- Catching Fire
- Mockingjay
Best after you already know the trilogy.
Correction: Some competing lists reverse Sunrise and Ballad in “chrono” tables. Correct: 10th (Ballad) then 50th (Sunrise).
FAQ
Can I chrono-read as a first-timer?
You can, but publication order better preserves how reveals were designed. We recommend publication first.
